6 chapters34-44 pagesTone: warmFor Desk workers who feel stiff by mid-afternoon

Stiffness is rarely a structural problem. Most of it is a range of motion you own but never visit, because a chair, a car and a laptop have quietly agreed on your shape. This book takes you back through those positions slowly, in ten minute pieces, until they feel ordinary again.

What's inside

  1. 1Stiffness Is a Habit, Not a SentenceExplains why the same three areas tighten in almost everyone who sits for a living, and what actually changes when you stretch. After it you will know which of your stiffness is tissue and which is simply neglect.
  2. 2Range Is Not the Same as ControlDistinguishes passive flexibility from the strength to use it, and shows how to test both at home. After it you will be able to tell whether you need more range or more control of the range you have.
  3. 3Hips: The Desk TaxWorks through hip flexors, glutes and rotation with five positions and a clear order to do them in. After it you will have a hip routine that takes eight minutes and can be done beside a bed.
  4. 4Shoulders and the Upper BackCovers overhead reach, thoracic rotation and the shoulder positions that get lost first, using a wall and a doorway. After it you will be able to raise your arms overhead without your ribs coming with them.
  5. 5Ankles, Feet and BalanceRestores ankle bend and foot strength, the two things that quietly limit squatting, walking downhill and standing still. After it you will have three ankle drills and a balance test to repeat monthly.
  6. 6Ten Minutes a Day, Six WaysAssembles everything into six short routines for morning, desk breaks, after driving, before training, after training and evenings. After it you will have a printable card for each and no reason to invent a session.

A sample from chapter one

Stiffness is mostly a lack of visits

Think about the positions you actually reached yesterday. Probably a shallow bend to pick something up, a small twist to reverse the car, and an arm halfway overhead for a cupboard. Everything past that went unvisited, and the body is careful with ranges it never sees. It does not lose them exactly, it just stops trusting them, and untrusted range feels tight long before it is genuinely short.

That is good news, because visiting is cheap. Two minutes in a deep squat, a minute hanging or reaching overhead, and a slow twist in each direction will keep more range than an hour of hard stretching once a fortnight. The aim is frequency, not intensity. You are reminding your body that these shapes are still part of normal life rather than forcing anything to lengthen.

  • Hold each position long enough to breathe out three times before you judge it.
  • Visit your stiffest area twice a day rather than once for twice as long.
  • Stop at the first sharp sensation: stretching should feel broad and dull, never pointed.
  • Test one movement on the first of the month and write the result down.

Key takeaways

  • Most stiffness comes from ranges you rarely visit rather than tissue that has genuinely shortened.
  • Short daily sessions build more usable range than one long weekly stretch.
  • Range you cannot control under your own strength will not stay yours for long.
