Marketing on the Free plan, when you do not have a send button
AI email, discount codes and countdowns are Pro features. Here is the honest list of what you can still do on Free, and how far it actually gets you.

You have set the store up, the products look right, and then you find the email section and it is behind the Pro plan. Discount codes too. Countdown campaigns as well. It is tempting to conclude that marketing starts when you upgrade, and to do nothing much until then. That conclusion costs people months. Most of what makes a small store work in its first year does not involve a send button at all.
What is genuinely missing, stated plainly
It would be dishonest to pretend the Free plan is the same product with a smaller badge. There is no broadcast tool. You cannot issue a discount code, run a countdown campaign, point a custom domain at your store, host course video or connect Google Analytics. Full analytics, including traffic source, begin on Starter. The AI e-book studio starts at one book a month on Starter.
Those are real gaps and there is no clever workaround for most of them. What is worth understanding is that every one of them is an amplifier. A discount code makes an existing audience buy sooner. A countdown makes an existing offer feel urgent. A broadcast reaches a list you already have. None of them create the audience, the offer or the list, and in the first few months those three things are the entire job.
The one thing you should never do on Free is wait. The customer list is filling itself in from your very first sale and your very first free download, whichever plan you are on, and full CSV export is included. That means the months you spend on Free are not lost time. They are the months in which the list gets built.
A bio link and a note app versus a Free store
The honest comparison is not Free against Pro. It is Free against what most people are doing right now, which is a link page somewhere else, a payment link in the captions and a list of buyers nobody is keeping.
| The old way | On the store.fan Free plan |
|---|---|
| A bio link page with your links on it and nothing to buy. | The same link-in-bio page with unlimited link cards, on a storefront that can also sell. |
| Buyers exist in payment notifications and nowhere else. | A customer list that builds itself from every purchase, membership and free download. |
| Your list is trapped in someone's dashboard until you pay to get it out. | Full CSV export on every plan, Free included. |
| A platform fee comes off every sale on top of card processing. | 0% platform fee on every plan. Card processing fees are Stripe's and still apply. |
| Money lands in a platform's account and arrives later. | Payments go directly to your own Stripe account. store.fan never holds your funds. |
| Your page is invisible to search and looks like everybody else's. | Statically rendered storefront and product pages with their own titles and descriptions, plus 28 themes, 11 layouts and 16 fonts. |
Eight things to do this month without sending anything
Every one of these works on Free. None of them need a broadcast, a code or a timer.
- 1Treat your link cards as campaign slots. Reorder them every Monday so the top card is whatever you want people to do this week. Unlimited cards means you never have to delete last week's.
- 2Change the cover photo when the season or the offer changes. The full designer is on Free, and a store that visibly changes reads as a store somebody is running.
- 3Write proper product page copy. These pages are statically rendered with their own titles and descriptions and sit in the sitemap, so the words you choose are doing search work while you sleep.
- 4Put one free product on the page and let it collect people into your customer list.
- 5Export your customer list to CSV once a month and read it. Lifetime value per person is on Free and it will change what you make next.
- 6Do the round trip properly: sort, label a segment column, and import the tidy version back so the list is organised the day you can email it.
- 7Run a manual promotion instead of a discount code. Announce a lower price, change the price for four days, then change it back and say so. It is more work and it is completely honest.
- 8Message your ten highest-value customers individually. Ten personal messages beat a broadcast to 200 people, and you will only ever have the time to do this while you are small.
Three months on Free, and what you have at the end
Picture a straightforward three months. You put up one paid product and one free one, you rearrange your link cards most weeks, and you post about the store where your audience already is. Suppose that produces something like 120 people in your customer list, most of them from the free product, with a couple of dozen who have paid you. That is not a big number and it is not a promise about your store, but it is a real one.
The point is what those three months mean the day you do trial a paid plan. You are not starting a list. You are inheriting one, already sorted, already carrying lifetime values, made up of people who found you recently enough to remember your name. The alternative version of those three months — waiting until you could afford the send button — ends with the same day arriving and an empty list attached to it. You can compare what each plan adds on the pricing page when that day comes.
Take the free plan, keep the link-in-bio page forever, and start collecting a customer list you own.
Start on FreeThe mistake most people make
They build a list on Free and let it go cold. Two hundred people who took a free download eleven months ago are not really a list; they are two hundred people who will not recognise your name. If you cannot email yet, stay visible in the places those people found you, and keep the free product genuinely current so the ones who arrive today are getting your best work. The other mistake is subtler: treating Free as a demo to be escaped rather than a plan to be used. The link-in-bio page is free forever, so there is no cliff and no rush.
There is no store.fan platform fee on any plan. Stripe's own card processing fees still apply, and payments go directly to your own Stripe account rather than being held by store.fan.
Yes. Full CSV export is included on every plan, Free included. You can also import a list from any CSV.
AI email marketing with 5,000 emails a month, discount codes, countdown campaigns, a custom domain, hosted course video and the Google Analytics integration. Full analytics start on Starter.
When you have both a list worth writing to and something specific to say to it. Paid plans start with a 14-day free trial, so you can test that judgement rather than guess at it.
A send button is a lever, and levers need something to push against. Spend the free months building that something: a page that is worth landing on, a free product that is worth downloading, and a list of names that keeps growing while you decide. The email will still be there when you are ready to write it.
Set up your store.fan/you page today and decide about paid plans when the list is worth writing to.
