Weddings get expensive one reasonable decision at a time. Nobody sets out to spend more than they have; they simply agree to forty small upgrades, each of which seemed fair on its own. This guide works in the opposite direction, starting from a number you have written down and deciding what that number buys, in the order the decisions actually arrive.
What's inside
- 1The number, and who is paying itYou agree a total figure, establish who is contributing and what expectations come attached to that money. After this chapter the budget exists as a written number rather than a vague sense of what feels reasonable.
- 2The guest list is the whole budgetYou draft the list in three tiers and see immediately how each name multiplies through food, drink, seating and venue size. This chapter includes the ways to cut a list without causing lasting offence, and the ones that do.
- 3Venue, and the costs hidden behind the hire feeYou compare venues on total cost rather than headline hire, including corkage, staffing, chair hire, cleaning, timings and overrun charges. After this chapter you can put two very different quotes side by side and see which is genuinely cheaper.
- 4Food and drink without the wedding markupYou look at the realistic options between a full sit-down caterer and asking your friends to cook, and cost each one honestly. The chapter covers supplying your own drink, what corkage really adds up to, and how much people actually eat.
- 5Clothes, flowers and ringsYou find the versions of each that cost a fraction of the wedding-priced equivalent, including sample sales, seasonal flowers and hiring rather than buying. After this chapter you have prices for each item and a decision on what you are keeping afterwards.
- 6The three things worth paying forYou choose the small number of things you will not economise on, which for most couples means photographs, food and enough help on the day. This chapter explains how to protect that spending when everything else is being trimmed.
- 7The month before, and the day itselfYou build the running order, brief the people helping, and decide in advance what happens if it rains or someone does not turn up. After this chapter you have a one-page plan that means nobody needs to ask you anything on the day.
A sample from chapter one
Write the number down before anything else
Sit down together and agree one figure, in pounds, that you are willing to spend in total. Write it at the top of a page. Everything in this guide is a decision about how to divide that number, and without it you are not budgeting, you are just hoping the total lands somewhere survivable. Include everything: rings, clothes, travel, the night before and the honeymoon if you are having one.
Then find out where the money is coming from, including whether either family intends to contribute. This is an awkward conversation and it is far more awkward six months later, when a contribution turns out to have carried an expectation about the guest list. Ask what the sum is, whether it is a gift or a loan, and whether it comes with anything attached.
- Agree one total figure and write it at the top of the budget page.
- Include rings, clothes, travel and the honeymoon in that figure, not just the day itself.
- Ask any contributing family for a specific amount and what, if anything, comes with it.
- Hold back a tenth of the total as a contingency and do not spend it on upgrades.
Key takeaways
- A budget only works if it is one written number that includes everything.
- Money offered by family is easier to accept once you know what expectations come with it.
- A contingency you refuse to spend early is what keeps the final month calm.
