Moving is not one job, it is about forty small ones arriving in the wrong order. Almost all of the stress comes from doing them late rather than from doing them badly. This guide sets the forty jobs out as an eight-week countdown, so that on the day itself the only thing left to do is carry boxes.
What's inside
- 1Eight weeks out: dates, quotes and the paper trailYou fix the moving date as firmly as your circumstances allow, get three removal quotes and start one folder that holds every document. After this chapter you know what the move will cost and who is doing the lifting.
- 2Six weeks: the great sort-outYou go room by room deciding what is moving with you, since paying to transport things you do not want is the most avoidable cost of the whole move. The chapter includes what charity shops will and will not take, and how long a council bulky waste collection needs booking ahead.
- 3Four weeks: the address list nobody writes downYou build the full list of everyone who needs your new address, from the obvious utilities to the dentist, the vet and the car insurer. After this chapter you have the list, the order to do it in and the redirection booked.
- 4Two weeks: packing in the right orderYou pack from the least used room outwards, label boxes by destination room rather than contents, and keep a numbered list of what went where. This chapter also covers what movers will not take and what should travel in your car.
- 5The last week: the survival boxYou put together the box that travels with you and gets opened first, holding kettle, bedding, tools, chargers, medicines and enough to feed everyone. After this chapter your first evening does not depend on finding the right box.
- 6Moving day itselfYou run the day with one person at each end, meter readings taken, keys accounted for and children and pets somewhere else if at all possible. The chapter includes the short walk round the empty house that saves an argument later.
- 7The first week inYou unpack in the order that makes the house liveable rather than tidy, starting with beds and the kitchen, and find the stopcock before you need it. After this chapter you have a short list of jobs for the first week and permission to leave the rest.

Book the date before you book anything else
Everything in a move hangs off one date, so pin it down as early as your chain or your tenancy allows and tell everyone at once. Removal firms fill up first at the end of the month and at the end of a quarter, which is exactly when most people move. If you have any choice at all, a midweek date in the middle of a month is cheaper and calmer.
Get three quotes and insist that each one is based on someone seeing the house, in person or over video. A quote given over the phone from a room count is a guess, and the difference turns up as an extra van on the day. Ask each firm what their insurance covers, what they will not carry, and whether packing materials are included in the price.
- Get three removal quotes, each based on a survey rather than a phone description.
- Ask directly what the firm will not move, including paint, fuel and some plants.
- Start one folder, paper or digital, for every quote, contract and reference number.
- Put the date in a shared calendar with the week either side blocked out for jobs.
Key takeaways
- Nearly every moving cost and delay traces back to a decision made too close to the day.
- A quote given without seeing the house is a guess you will pay for later.
- One folder holding every document turns most moving-day panics into a two-minute search.
