I'm Clara — a Sevilla-born Spanish teacher and former DELE oral examiner. In 12 years I've helped 4,000+ adults go from freezing mid-sentence to chatting easily with locals, using conversation-first methods instead of textbook drills.

🌞

The July cohort of The Sobremesa Method closes enrollment on July 24 — the spring group sold out in six days. I take August off from 1:1 coaching for my in-person Sevilla immersion week, so if you want a private session before the break, the last bookable slot is July 30. The live Think in Spanish workshop on August 12 is on as planned, replay included if you're on a beach somewhere.

Why I teach conversation first

I spent my first three years as a teacher doing what my textbooks told me to: verb charts on Monday, vocabulary lists on Wednesday, a quiz on Friday. My students passed the quizzes — and froze the moment a real Spaniard spoke to them. So I flipped the whole thing. Now every student of mine speaks from day one, out loud, imperfectly, about things they actually care about. Grammar still matters, but it arrives the way it does for kids in Sevilla: as the answer to a question you already have. That's the method behind everything on this page — the cheat sheets, the course, the club. My promise is simple: within weeks, not years, you'll hold a real conversation and enjoy it. La sobremesa — the long, unhurried talk after the meal — is where Spanish actually lives. Come sit at the table.

What students say

“I did four years of high-school Spanish and couldn't order a coffee. Six weeks into Clara's course I spent an entire dinner in Madrid speaking only Spanish — the waiter assumed I lived there.”

Rachel Whitmore · Marketing director, Boston

“Clara's subjunctive cheat sheet did in two pages what my university course couldn't do in a semester. I passed DELE B2 in November with an 86 on the oral exam.”

Tom Keller · Software engineer, Berlin

“The club is the reason my Spanish stuck. Three conversation tables a week with real humans — I went from rehearsing sentences in my head to actually interrupting people in Spanish. Sorry, Clara.”

Priya Raman · Sobremesa Club member, 14 months

Frequently asked questions

I'm a complete beginner. Where should I start?+

Grab the free 50 Phrases cheat sheet and use it for a week — it will carry you through your first real exchanges. Then join The Sobremesa Method: the course is built for beginners through low-intermediate, and the only prerequisite is willingness to speak out loud, imperfectly, from day one. Total beginners who want a head start often book a single 1:1 first so I can map out a plan.

Do you teach Latin American or European Spanish?+

My base is Spain — I was born and teach in Sevilla — so my default vocabulary and accent are peninsular. But every cheat sheet flags Latin American variants where they differ, and the club has conversation partners from Mexico, Colombia and Argentina. The grammar is 95% identical; I'll make sure you understand and are understood on both sides of the Atlantic.

How is this different from Duolingo or a textbook?+

Apps train recognition: you learn to pick the right answer. Conversation requires production: building your own sentences under time pressure, out loud, with a human waiting. That's a different muscle, and it's the only one I train — every lesson, sheet and club session here ends with you speaking. Keep your app for vocabulary if you enjoy it, then come here to turn it into conversation.

What if I'm too shy or embarrassed to speak?+

You're describing about 80% of my students on day one — including the ones who now interrupt me in Spanish. Shyness isn't a flaw to fix before you start; it's exactly what the method is designed around: tiny speaking missions, tables capped at six people, and a culture where mistakes are raw material, not failure. The fastest cure for the fear of speaking is thirty accumulated minutes of having spoken.
